An action-packed and gritty Progression Fantasy LitRPG from CB Titus, bestselling author of Armor and Downtown Druid.
Titles are Earned. Deeds are Written. Power is Forged in the Blood of Battle.
Michael didn’t want to die. He didn’t deserve to die. After a lost battle with cancer that started only a year after he retired, he’d lived what many people would call a full life, but it wasn’t enough.
He wanted more time.
When he found himself drawn toward the light, he fought his way away from it. Unfortunately, that didn’t take him back to the life he wanted to live.
Reincarnated in another world, Michael is forced to be a Penitent, a soldier in the country he was reborn into in order to pay a debt to society he owes for taking the life of the child whose body he inhabits. It’s not the life he wants, but it’s the only one he has.
Because titles are earned. Deeds are written. And power is forged in the blood of battle.
Experience the start of a gritty Progression Fantasy LitRPG series where every scar earned is a power granted and every deed written on the soul can change the fate of kingdoms.
Perfect for fans of The Iron Prince, Bastion, Iron Blooded, and A Soldier’s Life!

I’m 4 hours in and I don’t see the end to this build-up. If it is building to something at all, that is. So, I will make my judgement at this point.
The protagonist is a very twisted man, morally. It is the polar opposite of Spartacus story. Not only the MC has accepted the slavery imposed on him and all the reincarnates, he is constantly justifying it, letting it feed into his self-hatred and masochism.
I was disgusted reading it, waiting for some of enlightenment to descend upon him, but now, 4 hours in, I start to think that it is also the position of the author. If it is indeed the case, I’m giving the book the lowest possible rating. If, on the other hand, there is a twist farther down, I still hold on to that score, because I was made to suffer through it for four very dull hours.

I just wrote a long response then realized I wasn’t logged in :(. In summary, the MC doesn’t get over his savior and self-hatred complex but he does a better job recognizing it. Book 2 might be a lot better in that regard. The last couple pages does have a slavery related twist.
The book feels very similar to A Solder’s Life. There’s no specific plot, just the main party trying to survive their captivity and the military missions they’re sent on after the training arch.
The book does have faults, no book is perfect. The perfect healing ability is too good for that guy to be on the front lines. The MC has a self-defeatist personality which should have gotten him killed. If you can ignore that, it’s a great story compared to many others on here. The titles and deeds seem very arbitrary to me. The author can do whatever he wants since there’s no hard rules to the system.

I’m 5 hours in and really enjoying it so far. Resembles A Soldiers’s Life in some ways which is good as long it treads it’s own path.
So far haven’t hit anything that justifies CorkyPie’s comment and I’m past where they got to. I enjoy a slow build up if it is well written and interesting. The MC gaining too much power tends to ruin a lot of series.

Finished it now and it was really good except I wasn’t really into the religious deity/god kind of worship part mostly only at the tail end. It’s obviously part of the story but as someone who finds religious worship ridiculous this goes a bit down far down that direction for me. And the self loathing from being a taker is pretty silly and would be better left out. I do agree the self defeatist stuff can get a bit much perhaps some more editing could improve things in these aspects.
Still it was very good otherwise and I might look into other books by this author.
