Seems that as of late LitRPG has been hijacked by writers that haven’t a clue what LitRPG means. I knew it would happen but it is still sad to see.

I hate it when that happens. What in the book made you think that, Jarvix.
Thanks for your work, AkemiAsh!

What about this is LitRPG?
The concept of LitRPG came about by writers who have grown up in a society with little hope of advancement and have used the world of gaming and later online gaming to escape their reality. As of late these books are more and more moving towards fantasy writing with an occasional occasional nod to remind you that it’s supposed to take place in a game.
Early writers such as Pierce Anthony, Drew Hayes transported people to a fantasy setting and under those conditions I have no complaint on how the alternate world is portrayed.
LitRPG is more specific to an individual (usually through VR) entering a gaming world and by not abiding to the cookie cutter mold or by partaking not in the grind but story line of the game thereby achieving fame and advancement.

@Jarvix, While technically you’re right if this novel, which I haven’t listened to, has game elements then it can broadly fit into the litrpg genre. Though I believe that this novel would likely fall into what is called the gamelit(?) genre. That being said quite a few novels that are hosted here under litrpg would not fall into what is strictly defined as litrpg. That being said lets not hate on this novel or author until after its read.

games don’t have to be on computers, role playing games were originally not on computers, why assume computers or VR has anything to do with an RPG?

@Jarvix , the book is about gaining XP , lvling abilitys , stats , classes , that is exactly what All LitRPGs have . so listen to a book before u write a rewiev.
book is good , slow start but goes in to proper high strategy book with heavy LitRPG elements.

I managed two hours before I couldn’t take the robotic characters anymore, most games have better dialog and this is supposed to take place in the real world.
@Irtus Do we really need another genre for something almost indistinguishable from litRPG?

My comment is based more on what I have seen of late within what people claim to be LitRPG and what it was when it 1st appeared on shelves. On the comment of hating on a book or author prior to reading the book. With so much literature available these days we must base our desire of what to read on something. No different here than if I went to a book store or library. The cover is the 1st thing that attracts you. The book is listed as Fantasy/Sci-Fi/LitRPG but what I see is a cover of a Horror book. Then when I look at the synopsis, which is the only other thing you can use to judge your interest in a book, I see no mention whatsoever about the very thing that drew me to it to begin with. So, given these 2 factors this book will have me move on to others.

@Schnoo, honestly i don’t think so, but I have seen arguments over the distinction between game world (e.g. VR game, transportation into a game/game world, etc.) vs game elements (think Adam Elliott’s Tower of Babel or Justin Sloan’s Shadow Corps).
In all honesty it reminds me of the distinction between urban fantasy and paranormal romance. In the end they are similar enough at times that it would be hard to tell the difference, while at others it’s glaringly obvious(e.g. Jim Butcher vs Kresley Cole)
Just assume that as the litrpg genre grows that you’ll see more arguments over what classifies as litrpg or something else.

2.5 stars by LitRPG standards (which is a lower standard than normal as this genre is filled with amateurs and hack writing)
This book is definitely LitRPG by most people’s standards. Pretty good world building and a better LitRPG system than most books in this genre. It also has elements of town/base building. These things were interesting enough to keep me listening to the end. Now on to the bad. The narrator is mediocre at best. The characters aren’t great as most of them are one dimensional and act and talk in ways which aren’t very realistic. This brings me to the biggest issue with the book. The dialog. The dialog is absolutely atrocious. All of the characters speak with the same robotic and simplistic stiffness. The dialog is so bad that despite the interesting premise, world building, and LitRPG elements, I almost had to quit at multiple points. If this were any other genre this book would be a 1.5 but seeing as the LitRPG bar is so low I’m giving it a 2.5.

yea its a LitRPG , Cool concept could have been way better if the characters had more depth and the world more weight ps: that first part with grinding for points, I would have taken that part out and used it to give the main characters some background… pps: “play to live” and “Project Daily Grind” , books like that made me love this gerne. then there where the dungeon litrpgs they where fresh and i liked them alot. now most litrpgs are crap or good but then only one book is made. this book has a great concepts but the writing is meh and characters don’t give a f@#$ in the first few chapters…

I actually liked it a lot once you get past the first couple of chapters it’s a great story. I cant disagree with the lack of empathy but I felt like the writer himself is like th he character devil. People write about what they know and that’s how it felt to me. It’s hard to believe that a person with such an interesting and unique story would fail to see the lack in his chars unless he himself cant relate. Also agreed on is he cover not really indicative of the book but it’s very expensive to get cover arts done so I cant really hold it against him. Thanks for the upload.

They their them they the this student person singular themselves. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah..That’s taking things way to far!! 8 minutes in and im wondering if all the characters except the 2 MC’s are hermaphrodite’s.
The narrator is also subpar..
These kinda hobbyist indie writers.. How so many manage to get their so called books published in audio is beyond my understanding.
Its getting so bad that language itself is being degraded..

I’ve read through the comments in this thread and I find the argument over what a litRPG is and is not is interesting. I’m writing one myself, using the mechanics from Dark Souls, at least under the hood. Most of it is buried in narrative and it’s actually science fiction masquerading as fantasy by virtue of unreliable narrators. If I can make it work, it’ll be unlike anything I’ve ever read, although it is a bit slow burn.
In any case, it turned out that becuase I was a bit vague on the definition of what exactly a litRPG was, I was actually writing a progressin fantasy instead. Apparently, the difference comes down to numbers. If you have them and can show them, (you don’t even have to do those annoying and suspension-of-disbelief-breaking ’system windows’) If you don’t have them or do but can’t show them, it’s a progression fantasy. It doesn’t have to take place in a dedicated game world, although that’s what I see a lot of and that is, I think the ‘cheap and easy’ way to do it.
I’m not an expert, you understand, and I worry a lot about how people will react to my story- in about another 125 typed pages, give or take when I’m finished and a lot of start-to-finish editing has been done. But I’m fairly certain, because instead of relying on my own opinion of what I think a litRPG should be I tried to find out what it actually was, that the game world is optional as long as game mechanics and numbers are in their somewhere and you do have progression.
I think I’ll pass on this book though.
