Thank you for sharing…..but FLAC is extreme overkill for spoken word. I reduce ALL of my audiobooks to 48kbps mp3s. The difference in audio quality is not remotely close to being worth the difference in storage space used, I went from 2.75 GiG down to 195 MB, that’s less than 8% of the space used.

@douggravesnectar92 this is a Graphic Audio so, even if Flac seem a little overkill, I guess, sound quality matters a little more when there are sound effects and cinematic music.

@douggravesnectar92 The point is that what’s shared should ALWAYS be the highest possible quality, because it can then be used as master to convert to whichever bitrate or format the user might need/want WITHOUT losing quality. Because you might want 48kbps mp3, someone else might want 64kbps mono AAC, someone else might want 128kb xHE-AAC, ecc… And the only way to ensure that the resulting quality for each person is as high as possible for their chosen bitrate and format is to have the source file (=Master) be as high bitrate and quality as possible, and in this case that’s FLAC.
On a side note, that’s why I’m so frustrated with people sharing 64kbps or even 64kbps mono re-encoded files on this website, because it removes the choice from the user downloading the torrent of what THEY want as format/quality, and that’s truly disappointing.
@Ufanlee True, but to be honest I haven’t noticed THAT much of a difference between the 128kbps AAC version present on this website and the FLAC version. There definitely is one, especially when there is a lot of background effects and music, and with good headphones the higher bitrate makes it easier to properly separate them and understand the spoken parts, but it’s not that big and really only noticeable if you’re using good wired headphones or if wireless those that support LDAC or aptx-lossless.

I’m with KLjWf6zR on this. The best quality available should be shared, and if wanted the end user can reencode as desired. This site isn’t like a release group for movies where 4k releases are shared as well as smaller 1080p, and 720p downsampled versions. So if only one version is going to be shared, it should totally be a good high quality version.

Flac is a bit overkill, it’s not music. Human voice range and quality can perfectly be caputeres with m4b; and that’s not like saying 60kbps mp3 is fine because of space. Flac is like using a battleship when all you needed for the same capacity was a fighter plane.
@krstqlmntwhatever Your point is complete nonsense, when m4b produces the same quality as audible does. All you are doing is producing higher file sizes that will reduce how many people download the files or keep them on their drive because they don’t want to waste the space; this means there will be less people to seed them because it’s easier to store and seed smaller torrents, and a higher chance smaller torrents will retain seeds longer even if the original seeds stop because smaller files are more likely to be downloaded. Using flac is just being pretentious.
@efox You don’t know what you’re taking about. I haven’t seen many uploads from you, so I doubt you have any experience with this. It is easy to tell libation to extract the same audio quality as the source material to m4b, which is what I have done on every single upload of mine. The sound files always come out sounding the same. If there are files that sound low quality it is also possible that that was the original quality that was on audible;some voice actors use lower quality gear, and older recordings often have lower quality - it is very trite of known-nothings to blame the uploaders because it “SEEMS like quality has gone down,” simply based on their intuition.

I agree that flac is overkill, but bitrate should not be reduced so it reduces voice quality just to save space with subpar mp3s. M4bs are not that much bigger than mp3s, and can create an audio file with the same quality as the original with only around 500MB-1GB per book, which the average user finds acceptable; using mp3 to try to keep file size down to around 195MB just to save a few bytes is akin to being a scrouge or penny-pincher.
